Living Latin at Durham

Circulus Latinus Dunelmensis – Durham Spoken Latin Seminar

The Circulus Latinus Dunelmensis is a Latin-immersion seminar that gives University staff and students the opportunity to develop their active command of the Latin language in a supportive and relaxed environment. The Circulus typically meets once a week, and participants gain valuable experience through discussions, exercises and readings – all held in Latin.

Why speak Latin?

Using a language actively, whether it be ancient or modern, is the most effective way of building reading proficiency. By speaking Latin, learners can also gain greater command of Latin idiom, becoming more sensitive to different shades of meaning between synonyms and different grammatical constructions.

In addition, speaking Latin is great fun! Circulus members enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of sessions and the chance to learn by collaborating and interacting with friends.
